The origins of baby massage

Baby massage is a strong tradition that has been lovingly passed down through generations in many cultures, particularly in India and Africa. Over the past 30 years, this nurturing practice has made its way to the western world, becoming increasingly embraced by families in countries like the UK since the late 1990s. The International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) now has certified instructors in over 50 countries worldwide.

At its core, baby massage is about creating a special, intimate moment between a parent and their baby. Using gentle, non-fragranced vegetable oils, soothing strokes and soft holds are lovingly applied to the baby’s body in a sequence that has evolved over time. This rhythmic, tender touch offers more than just relaxation—it’s a powerful way to communicate both with words and through the warmth of your hands, making babies feel deeply loved, valued, and safe.

The IAIM baby massage course beautifully blends Indian and Swedish massage traditions, while also incorporating calming principles from yoga and reflexology. This holistic approach promotes not only physical well-being but also strengthens the emotional bond between parent and child. Baby massage has become a beloved practice in families all over the world, creating treasured moments of closeness, connection, and comfort that enrich both the baby’s and parent’s lives.
